Watching Fireworks from Waikiki Beach—Honolulu

Friday Night Fireworks in WaikikiMy wife and I have known for some time that there are weekly fireworks displays—every Friday– put on in Waikiki, because we can hear them. However, we’d never actually gone to see one, so this last Friday we decided to give it a try, since we do live right in Waikiki. We went down to the beach in between Fort DeRussy and the Shorebird restaurant. There is a rock jetty there where people sometimes line up on to watch the fireworks. We arrived on the beach at about 7:30 PM. People were already beginning to gather, snapping sunset photos as the sun sank below the island. Shark Cage Snorkeling on the North Shore—Haleiwa

Shark Cage Diving! When my wife and were looking for a thrill on the island of Oahu, we thought of one thing: shark cage diving! There are two shark dive operations on the north shore, based in Haleiwa. We went out with Hawaii Shark Encounters. We left early in the morning from the Haleiwa small boat harbor. Waikiki Filipino Festival—Honolulu

Waikiki Filipino Festival 2008On May 10, 2008, my wife and I went to the 16th annual Filipino Festival in Waikiki. There was also a parade which ran along Kalakaua Avenue, but we only attended the festival part of it, which was in Kapiolani Park, across the street from Queen’s Beach. We arrived at the park at around 11 AM and the festival was already in full swing. The park was filled with people celebrating Filipino culture: a musical group performed on a stage with dancers, vendors of all sorts sold food and drinks, arts and crafts, while families and people of all ages walked around experiencing it all. A Trip to the Waikiki Aquarium–Honolulu

Waikiki AquariumMy wife and I took a trip to the Waikiki Aquarium lately. We live in Waikiki, and sometimes when you live in a place you don’t do the more “touristy” things, but we decided that since we are scuba divers and like fish, and that the aquarium is right by where we live, that we should go see it. Plus, the aquarium offers a “kama’aina discount” to those who live in Hawaii, including students and military, so it was less than the general price of admission, which is $7 for adults, $3.50 for kids 13-17, and free for the 12-and-under set. Overall, we found the aquarium to be a terrific bargain. Read the rest of A Trip to the Waikiki Aquarium–Honolulu »

Kulamanu Beach—Honolulu

Kulamanu BeachWhen my wife and I wanted to find a beach that’s off the beaten track but still on the south shore, we found it in the form of Kulamanu Beach. This is a public but little known beach that is roughly in between Waialae Beach and the easternmost beaches of Diamond Head. To get there you pass through a very nice residential neighborhood. When you see the corner of Kulamanu Street and Kulamanu Place, you’re almost there—just walk downhill toward the ocean. We got there at about ten in the morning and there were lots of local people walking down to the beach along with us, carrying coolers, umbrellas and surfboards. A Sunny Waikiki Afternoon at Honolulu Zoo

Zoo EntranceWe spent one of Waikiki’s famous sunny afternoons at Honolulu Zoo. My boss had given me two passes to the zoo. His friend donated to the zoo on his behalf as a Christmas present. He didn’t care to go to the zoo and I like the zoo. I went with my boyfriend who’s lived on the island for two years but hasn’t seen the zoo. Since the day was still hot we decided to refresh ourselves with ice cream from one of the many ice cream shops along Kalakaua Avenue. We were passing it by on the way to the zoo. Picnicking at Ala Moana Beach Park - Honolulu

A friend of mine recently invited me to spend an afternoon at Ala Moana Beach Park with her and her family. It was the day of their annual family picnic, and she promised I’d have a great time.

I enjoyed my drive to the beach, which is located right across from Ala Moana Shopping Center. It was a great location because it was easy to do a little shopping and then a little swimming. The shopping center parking lot is restricted to paying customers, but there was plenty of roadside parking by the beach.

I parked and headed over to where my friend’s picnic area was set up. There was a sandy beach area, as well as a grassy area. This made the beach ideal for both picnics and swimming because we didn’t have to worry about getting sand in our food. Read the rest of Picnicking at Ala Moana Beach Park - Honolulu »

Driving Mini-Cars to Waialae Beach

Driving Mini-cars to Waialae BeachMy wife and I and another couple live in Waikiki and decided to do two interesting things in one: we rented little scooter-bikes and drove them to Waialae Beach. I call them “scooter-bikes” for lack of a better term—they are motorized three-wheeled vehicles with seats for two people, including the driver, and a small trunk space in back. They are painted bright colors like yellow and red, and have orange bike flags attached to them for better visibility to traffic. Read the rest of Driving Mini-Cars to Waialae Beach »

Watching OHCRA Regatta on Waikiki Beach

Hau Tree LanaiFourth of July was a great day for my boyfriend and me. It was Friday and we both had the day off together. This does not happen too often for us. We planned to make the most of the day. We decided to start the day with breakfast at his friend’s restaurant and walk down to the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel to watch my canoe club race in the OHCRA or Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association McFarlene 4th of July regatta at Waikiki Beach. The Beaches of Diamond Head—Honolulu

Diamond Head BeachWhen my wife and I want to go to an un-crowded beach right next to Waikiki, we head for the shores of Diamond Head. The iconic landmark of Oahu, Diamond Head is the extinct volcano on the east end of Waikiki. There are upscale neighborhoods such as Hawaii Kai that border the land side of Diamond Head, but the side that faces the oceans has some of the best beaches on Oahu’s south shore.
