White Plains Beach — A Great Spot for Teens - Honolulu

If you live in Ewa Beach or Kapolei, you don’t have to drive very far to get to some great beaches. One of these is White Plains Beach, near Kalaeloa. From what I understand, this used to be a part of Barber’s Point Naval Station, but is now open to everyone. Finding it, however, isn’t that easy unless you know where you’re going. Maybe this is why it’s not super crowded like some of the more touristy beaches. White Plains is definitely off the beaten path, and as you’re driving there, you may even wonder if you’re going to the right place! The first time I went there, I was convinced I was heading in the wrong direction and so I gave up! Fortunately, though, I tried to find it again and was pleasantly surprised…
There’s ample parking once you reach the end of the desolate roads leading to White Plains. There’s still a “military” feel to the area and there are still recreational facilities that are open only to service members, their families, and retirees. The beach, however, is open game for everyone! It hit me right away that this is a place where a lot of teens hang out. They seem to love congregating there. My first time there was during Spring Break and the average age was 15. Another time, I noticed teenagers everywhere, basking in the sunshine after school. So if you have teens, and if you’re new to the island, this could be a great place for your kids to make friends! If you’re not a fan of teens, I’d maybe suggest avoiding this beach during Spring Break! That’s when the place gets a little more crowded. A group of about six kids plopped themselves down next to me and they were SO close that I could reach out and touch their boogie board! Anyone observing probably thought I was part of their group! Ha ha!
The main reason I believe White Plains is so loved is the waves. They are incredible! The ocean is packed with people of all ages (and tons of teens, of course!) learning how to surf or mastering their style. In fact, I think there are usually more people in the water than on the sand!

There are restroom facilities and a nice picnic area, so this is a wonderful spot to spend the whole day. Take the H1 westbound and exit at Kapolei. Follow the signs for Kalaeloa and enter the housing community. You’ll notice your surroundings will start to take on a military look. You’ll spot signs to White Plains – follow them and don’t hesitate when the road starts to get desolate! I promise, there IS a beach at the end of the road! And it’s worth it!
